How should you negotiate with your interviewer?

You may be very excited because you got a call for an interview for the company that you were vying for. If it is a large corporate organization, you must know that the interviewer is well aware that you want the job, and therefore you should not come across as seeming too desperate for the job, as the interviewer may offer you a salary package you may not be able to refuse and be stuck with.

It is important that you seem confident and know what you want and you know what you are worth. There are a number of vacancies for fresh graduates and if you do not get the salary and profile you are looking for career development at the large corporate, do not be afraid. A small organization can bring you as much learning as well.

A few things that you should keep in mind when at an interview and negotiating with your interviewer are as follows: Highlight your strengths. Make sure that you let the interviewer know why you are perfect for the job. Study the profile and make him understand how you fit the profile best and why you deserve the salary you are asking for.

If you have an impressive resume, you can be sure that the interviewer will try to bargain, but do not give in, wait for a few days if you are made the offer. This will let them know that you are considering other offers and may stop coercing you to lower your asking price.

Be Prompt: With the advent of the internet, you have the advantage of being prompt and get things done quickly. With smart phones offering email features, you should be able to reply to emails the moment you get them. However, if you think you need more time to frame a reply, simply send in a one line mail saying that you will get back to them shortly. Follow Processes: They say the institution is bigger than the individual and you must respect that. Processes at an organization are set up for quality control and you need to abide by that so that people working with you are constantly in the loop of what is happening even if you are not around.

Stick To Your Word: If you have made a commitment, stick to it. Simply make sure the resources you have at your disposal before you make a promise. It is better to under promise and over deliver than the other way around.

Five tips for better phone interviews

You may be intimidated by the thought of a personal interview, but what you do not know is that a phone interview can be equally intimidating if you are not prepared.  There are a list of do’s and don’ts that you must follow if you want to make a good impression on the phone. Over and above learning the right phone etiquette, you have to be better prepared as compared to a personal interview. Since you cannot make an impression with the way you dress and how you look, you will have to ensure that you leave a lasting impression on the phone.

Five ways in which you can master the art of phone interviews and succeed in scoring the job you want are listed below:

Connection: It is important that the phone line you are using to have your interview is not one that keeps breaking up. You need to ensure that the number you list on your resume for a phone interview is one that can be trusted and not fail you. Also ensure it is a clear line and there are no disturbances. Also make sure that are no external disturbances. Close your room door and ensure no traffic noise seeps in through the cracks as well.

Practice: It is important that you have a fair idea of the questions that may be asked during the job interview.  Try and practice before you take the call.

Never interrupt: Do not interrupt while the interviewer is asking you a question or saying something. Wait till they are finished and then ask your question.

Do not eat or drink: Try and have some water before you start your interview, so you do not need to take a sip while it is going on. Do not talk much on anything while your interview is in progress

Smile: Have a pleasant disposition. They say when you smile; the caller can hear it in your voice.

Is your resume Internet ready?

If you do not keep up with the latest technological changes and trends that are doing the rounds of many recruitment offices in the top organizations in the country, you and your resume may be left behind.

Today, most organizations accept soft copies of CVs, so that they can easily program their computers to feed the data on these CVs into their system. Initially, that process was done by the way of optical scanners which would transfer the essential information on to the system. However, optical systems do not always capture the right data and therefore a lot of your information can be missed.

With this scenario a lot of people dropped the idea of a traditional paper CV and started working only on soft copies that were impressive and assisted easy assimilation of data at the employer’s end. The next change that has come to force is the birth of the video CV. While the video CV cannot help data collection, it gives candidates a chance to stand apart from a crowd.
A video CV through Koozba can allow candidates not only create a video CV but also upload it on the portal and use it as a network to meet with employees who may be interested in their credentials. Today, a number of recruiters are using professional and social networking websites to find the right candidates and being ready on these platforms with your profiles is equally important as having a soft or hard copy of your CV updated.

What do employers in the IT sector look for from applicants?

The IT sector may be a very lucrative sector. However, there are a number of things that employers in this sector look for in the applicants. It is imperative that you have a basic idea of what skills you need to posses to apply for a job in this sector before you go ahead and send in your CV to a number of IT firms. If you do not posses those skills and are only applying to the company because you wish to get a transfer to a foreign country sometime in the future, you may end up wasting too much time.

A few things that IT firms look for in applicants during the hiring process are highlighted below:
  • PHD: For research position in IT companies, the recruiting department will look for people who hold PHD’s. IF you do not have a PHD applying for a research position in any of the top companies is a waste of your time and that of the company’s.
  • Degree: Most IT organizations look for candidates who have degrees in Science, engineering or management. A combination of engineering and management is definitely preferred.
  • Soft skills: Most applicants are scrutinized for their passion to learn new things as well.
Getting a job in the IT sector without these pre requisites is not easy, and one should have made up their mind when in early college if IT was a sector that they were passionate about.

Is it difficult to get a job when you have a disability?

Oh yes! It is extremely difficult to find a job when you have a disability. While some organizations will not hold a bias and will consider only your qualifications and experience while awarding you the position you are interviewing for, others will hold it against you and consider over and over again before they do decide to go with you.

If you have a physical disability you must understand and make a list of things you can do and things you will not be able to do. Once you have identified the kind of job you may be suited for, you can apply to a couple of places and see how it goes from there. You also need to work around how you are going to approach the interview. While the telephonic interview may be a breeze, the interviewers may be alarmed when they see you in person as you had not disclosed to them that you have a disability that could hamper your performance.

Make sure that your physical disability or any other disability that is not apparent does not hamper your performance or competence. There are a large number of opportunities that allow you to work from home today and other opportunities as well that may not need to run around a lot and work from a desk. You need to make the employers believe that you are capable of performing tasks in spite of the disability that you have.

Lying on your resume is the worst mistake

If you lie on your CV, you have to be sure that if not now, you will definitely get caught sometime in the future, maybe just a few days after your interview is over. Most employers conduct background checks on candidates and if they find out information that does not match the information that you have shared with them, you be sure of a blemished reputation.

While it is not a crime, it does not reflect well on you. Misrepresenting your experience, your salary, your educational background etc. will land you in a soup if for any reason the human resource department thinks it is necessary to conduct a background check.

When you lie on your resume, you are not just lying to the employer but you are also lying to yourself because you do not meet the criteria that are required and therefore will not do justice to the job. If you need a certain degree or some relevant experience, take time out before jumping the gun and contest like other people who are vying to get the same job as you.

It is unfair to lie and take advantage of a company. You may be lucky, and the employers may never find out that you do not have a degree or have little experience in the area you are claiming expertise in, but eventually the truth will come out, either your work will tell, or they will find out some other way and you will have to pay heavily, both in terms of money as well as reputation.

Make the most of your selling skills to get the salary you desire

It is important to understand your worth and your potential before you go in for a job interview and discuss the salary with your prospective employer. It is also important that you have done a thorough background check and understood what the industry standard is before you start negotiating your salary package. Below listed are a few ways in which you can work towards building a salary package that works in your favour.

1. Sell yourself: It is important that you help the prospective employers understand why you are perfect for the job that they are interviewing for. Therefore it is important that you have and thorough understanding of the profile and craft your achievements to suit the job. When you do this, you are letting the employers know why you are ideal for the position.

2. Never disclose past salary: It is important that you not disclose your past salary and let the them evaluate you on your experience, skill sets, education and salary structure that is present in the company. When they ask you how much you expect, dodge the question and simply say that you expect a package that stands true with what is prevalent as an industry standard.

3. Wait: Do not get too excited and jump at the first offer you receive. Ask them to give you at least a couple of days to get back with an acceptance and in the meantime make sure you have a few interviews lined up so that you can understand what other companies may offer you so that you can pick right.

Take note of your body language when you are at an interview

When you go for an interview you have to understand that you are being scrutinized from every aspect. Your answers to the questions they ask you definitely hold weight,  but also how you present yourself and the body language you hold through the interview can determine whether you get the job or not.

Non verbal communication can play an instrumental role in making or breaking the deal and you have to pay special attention to how you conduct yourself at an interview if you want to get the job. Over and above rehearsing the answers to the questions they may ask you at the interview, you have to also focus on your body language and non verbal communication skills.

For instance, how you shake hands, how you sit, how you dress and the way you use your hands to make gestures may talk a lot about the kind of person you are. If you come across as being fidgety or keep shifting your eyes to look around the room you may be termed as being unfocused. A firm handshake divulges confidence and a limp handshake may suggest that you are nervous and anxious about something.

You need to project professionalism and confidence and the way you dress, the way you walk and the way you conduct yourself non-verbally in the interview will help you create a package that the employer may like and want. So while you need to focus on how you speak, you also need to focus on your non verbal communication.

Tips for a successful telephonic interview

When interviewing for a job via telephone, you may have to be a little more careful than when meeting the interviewee in person. You want to make a good impression and also ensure that the interviewer understands you perfectly. Below listed are a few tips on how you can have a successful phone interview so that you are happy and your interviewer is not disappointed.

1.Contact details: When providing your contact information, make sure you pick a phone number that allows for uninterrupted conversation. Do not provide a cell phone number, give your interviewer a landline number that he can contact you at, so that you do not have to worry about bad network coverage or call drops.

2. Practice: If you have a trusted friend, make sure you have a few rehearsals over the phone so that you can build on confidence. You also need to pre-empt the kind of questions that you may be asked so that you can draft answers that are brief and meet with the interviewers expectations.

3. Structure: If the interviewer does not provide you with a structure to the interview, politely tell him that you would appreciate if they could ask you all the questions first and then you will pose the questions you have after.

4. Etiquette: Make sure you have your manners in check before you start your telephonic interview. Try not to sneeze or cough and also please do not chew gum or eat anything while the interview is in process.

A few things you should know when discussing your salary at an interview

It is very important that you have your priorities right when you go in for a job interview. By this we mean that while the salary you are getting is important, what is also important is what you are getting from the job. You have to consider the brand name of the company, your profile and how much you are going to learn and how it is going to play a part in your career path. A few things that you should remember while discussing your salary are listed below:

1) Buy Time: Buying time can help you take an informed decision. When you go in for an interview, make sure you do your home work. Ask around to check how much the company pays, what is the industry standard etc. Also pay attention to your experience and your skill sets. Once you are done with the interview, make sure your questions are answered as well. Then ask for some time to get back to them with a figure. Do not take too long; make sure you reply within a day or two.

2) Salary Slab: Most multinational organizations and large corporate companies and even smaller one’s today have a slab for employees. Salary slabs are decided based on number of years of experience and education qualification. Try and get an idea as to which slab you come under.

3) Provide a Range: If an employer asks you to quote a salary amount, make sure you give them a range. This will work both in your interest and theirs.

4) Be comfortable: Do not shudder at the thought of giving a salary quote. Be comfortable and confidently answer the question.

At job, is it just about money?

One cannot be further than the truth. One’s first job should not be taken up only because the pay package is good. There are a number of other things that one as a fresher should remember before plunging into a job that may not be right for a career. Job satisfaction is also very important and if you are stuck in a job that pays you well but does not keep you happy, then you are doomed. Every job you take up and leave because you are unhappy will only mean a step back in your career path.

Money is important yes, and you should ensure that you are not exploited. Therefore, you should pay attention to a few things that are happening around you. For one, you should do your home work; you should try and understand what the industry standard is for a job in the industry you are looking for, what salary slab do you fall under and how much experience you have.

Video Resumes – The future is here

A number of experts in the Human resources domain are wondering if video resumes are the thing of the future. While they are right, one thing they are ignoring that it is already here. Vide resumes are being used rampantly by college students to showcase their skills like never before. Video resumes provide candidates with a platform to not only highlight their academic achievements, but also display creativity, out of the box thinking and showcase their personality.

Communication skills have become very important in today’s industry and employees want to know even before they decide to call a candidate for an interview, if he is right for the job. Therefore it is a win-win situation for both parties involved. Recruiters do not have to spend hours short listing resumes and reading through piles of paper and then be disappointed when they call the candidate in. Are video resumes the future of job applications?

If you too are considering sending in copies of your video resume instead of a contemporary paper CV, it could be a great idea. There are a number of advantages attached to creating a resume that helps you showcase your skills and personality better. However, it is important that you do not toss out the old CV and send it along with a covering letter as well.

A few advantages of video resumes are highlighted below:

1. Break the clutter: Fresh graduates who like stepping out of the box and do things differently can easily break the clutter with this innovative medium. A video resume is easy to put together, a simple digital camera and editing software is all you need. However, you need to make sure that the content is engaging and your personality comes across. No one is going to listen to a drab, boring video resume and certainly no one is going to pick you on the basis of it. So, it could help you break the clutter, but you may be left behind if you do not entertain the audience.

2. Skills: Your paper CV will give the prospective employee only a cursory idea of the skills you have. It will not help them see into your personality or your attitude. When you create a video resume, your employer can take a sneak peek into the charm you posses and it can help them decide whether you fit in with the culture of the organization.

There are a number of other advantages attached to creating a video resume; these are just the most important ones. Be sure to make a video resume that leaves an impression, as often the first one is usually the last.

Can using a video resume eliminate the personal interview process?

Recruitment is a tough task; employers have to go through thousands of resumes to pick a few who they think will be well suited for the job. Video resume have come as a boon to employers while they are looking for candidates, as it saves them the time of calling select people for an interview if they are not suited for the role. A video resume can help showcase one’s personality, demeanor and attitude, and if the employers do not like what they see in this regard, they know who to eliminate.

In fact today, experts in the HR industry believe that the video resume could actually eliminate the step of the personal interview in totality. However, this may not be a step in the right direction for certain fields, it is perfect for a few others. Nothing can replace a one on one interaction. Video resumes could be filmed over days therefore allowing a lot of time for preparation. It is not a great platform to judge one’s capacity to make quick decisions.

When you are hiring someone you need to know whether they are quick on their heels, are capable of cultivating lasting inter personal relationships and are team players. While a video resume can give you a fair idea if the individual has these skills, meeting the person is essential. While it may not completely eliminate the interview process it will surely help employers choose prospective candidates better based on their resume.

Koozba can help students create great video resumes that help them display all their skills, strengths and qualifications. Sharing these with prospective employees too is very simple. Video resumes are fast changing the way graduates are positioning themselves, it is a great tool, and however they meet the requirement of Step 1 of the interview process efficiently they cannot and should not replace the personal interview.

How to Create an Error Free Video Resume?

Today, a lot of people are tilting towards making video resumes to stand out of from the crowd. However, while they do manage to break the clutter and feed into the curiosity of the employer, they are usually disappointing. They lack structure, they are edited badly and they contain hardly any content that can be of use to the employer. It is important that one looks around, checks out a couple of good video resumes and then only ventures into making one for themselves.

Below listed are a few tips that will help you avoid some very common errors:
1. Keep it short: The first step is identifying what you want your video resume to convey. You cannot jabber on about yourself. You have to structure it, keep points that add value and delete those that do not. Keeping it short and coherent is the key.

2. Drama: While you are not making a short film, and simply highlighting key aspects of your resume, you should not simply read your resume off paper. An element of subtle drama could help you showcase your attitude and confidence.

3. Appearance: When you use the medium of a video resume, you should make an effort to look good. You do not have to wear expensive clothes, but dress how you would when you go in for an interview.

4. Filler words: Try and rehearse before you make the final cut. In this way you can memorize what you have to say and you can also avoid filler words like umm, err and aahs when you talk in front of the camera.

5. Gestures: Keep the gestures to a minimum. Do not appear fidgety. Do not fold your arms and speak either. Unnecessary arm movements can be distracting and will tear the focus away from the content and onto your movements.

Relocating may be a good idea for fresh graduates

Job hunting can be very tough. If you get out of college without a job do not be disappointed. You probably do not have a job because you were too stubborn about the options. If you have a certain industry in mind, you should not be very picky about the jobs and the salary at the beginning. Being insistent on not moving out of your home town can really narrow down results for you.

If you live in a small city but do not want to leave because your parents will be left alone, then you should ideally look for a job in the city first. If you have no luck, then you have to reconsider relocating. However, your journey has just begun. Once you get familiar with the job and understand the business you can always ask for a transfer. That way you can get the best of both worlds.

When you relocate you get out of your comfort zone and you have to fend for yourself. You have a new set of challenges to meet and it will always keep you on your toes. When you move out you learn how to become more responsible and grow as an individual. Try and pick a city that will help you add value to your life. Make sure that you can learn at every step, from everyone and from everything around you.
It may be a little difficult to adjust in a new city at first, but if you can handle the first few challenges, the road ahead will be much easier.

What is your Prospective Employer Thinking?

Most HR managers face the brunt for a hire that did not show results. Managers are stressed and they are the ones who push forward a few names and resumes who they think will add value to the team. However, these decisions are not always correct and sometimes a bad apple will indeed ruin the others. When you are looking for a job, you need to know what your prospective employer is thinking, in this way you can eliminate all his doubts and suggest that you are indeed the perfect candidate for the job.

When you do this, there are a few things you can work towards achieving:
1) Loyalty: You need to tell the interviewers or show them somehow that you are capable of loyalty. No organization would like to lose employees on a yearly basis. Today, in the times we live in, attrition rates are very high, and this is something employers are extremely worried about. You need to show them that you will not bail out on them.

2) Hard work: Nothing sells better than hard work. Through your previous track records, you could tell you are a hard and dedicated worker and will bend over backwards to achieve your goals. You do not have to over promise; just suggest that you will meet deadlines with efficiency.

Your resume will showcase your skills, strengths and educational qualifications, but your employers are also looking for some latent talent that only you can bring to the surface at the interview and going forward at the job as well.

Three Things Your Video Resume Should Have

Making a video resume can be a lot of fun and it is indeed one of the best ways to break the clutter, stand out from a crowd and make an impression. However, there are so many things you need to consider, while creating a video resume that you can’t simply keep the camera on roll and start shooting. You have to plan your video resume and ensure that it meets the following three criteria.

1. Appeal: Before you start making your resume, you need to know who you are talking to. Being conversant with the industry you wish to get into and also knowing the culture of the organizations you may be applying to could help make a stronger impression. If you are applying to a media company, you could get a little more creative and have some fun. Whereas, if you are applying to a software development company you may have to focus on highlighting your skills better.

2. Strengths: Showcasing your skills in an engaging manner could help your employers decide if you are good for the job. Identify the skill set that you require for the job, and if those skills are your strengths, make sure that they do not go unnoticed.

3. Design: Today, even basic editing software can help you create a unique video resume. Use a template that matches your style and personality, but at the same time looks professional. Use title to highlight certain skills and qualifications. Use titles to differentiate one segment from another. Have a pilot track playing the background, but make sure that it does not overpower your words.

Compelling work habits for fresh graduates

A positive attitude can help you win over the world. And when you are simply looking at being accepted well in the workspace a positive attitude can take you a long way. There are a number of ways in which you can prove to your employers that you are indeed a team player and hold respect for the people you work with. A few work habits that graduates should inculcate in order to be accepted at the workplace are listed below:

Volunteer for assignments: At the very start of the career, you have to be open to taking up challenges. Your superiors may have not been able to gauge your strengths and weaknesses and therefore you should volunteer for assignments so that they can gauge your potential and consider you for more important projects in the future.

Prioritize Your Work: Always prioritize your work. If you want to meet the deadlines that you have before you, you have to learn the art of prioritization. Along with knowing what task is more important that the other, you should also learn how to manage time effectively so as to build productivity.

Be nice to everyone: As mentioned earlier, a positive attitude can help you face absolutely any challenge. When you have a positive mindset it is easier to be nice to everyone. However, it’s not just your colleagues and your superiors that you should be nice towards; even the staff deserves to be treated with warmth.

When you do inculcate these basic but winning habits you will notice that you enjoy your job the environment and people will appreciate you and your work as well. And do not forget the most important rule – It is nice to be important, but it is also important to be nice.

Make the Best use of Summers

When you are in school you may spend your summers by the pool if you are in town, or you may get out of the city with your family for a vacation to beat the heat. However, as you grow older, you will have to make every summer count and you should. You can do this by taking up a summer job that will help preparing you for your real job after you graduate.

Don’t deliver pizzas: A lot of students often take up jobs that are labour intensive and do not really need them to use their acumen. These months are never going to come back, so use them to get a job in a company that you may want to work with in the future. The company will probably not pay you anything, but you will learn a lot about the industry and about the job profile you may be interested in.

Turn travel into research: If you are travelling during the summers, you could turn what you have learnt into an avenue for making money. Well, there are a number of websites who constantly look for articles on various destinations. You could put your experiences down and have them publish it on their websites for money.

There are indeed so many other things that you can do during the summer months. Especially today, with the internet being the prime source of thousands of job opportunities. So, do not waste your summer months idling around the house, or shooting pool at the local games parlour, but work towards finding something you may enjoy doing for the rest of your life.

Picking the First Offer: A right or a wrong Step?

There is nothing wrong in saying yes to the first job offer that comes your way. However, before accepting the offer you should know that the job is going to provide you with job satisfaction and going to compensate you according to what you deserve. A lot of people make mistakes by accepting the first job offer due to the following reasons:

Career over salary: Students often get very competitive and in an effort to prove that they can make more money than their peer might take up the first job offer that offers them a large salary package. However, what they do not understand is that the industry they may be picking does not interest them at all, and they will get bored in a matter of may be a few months or few years and it may be too late to switch courses then.

Pre application research: If you apply for the wrong first job, you may just get the offer. Therefore be sure that you have done the research that is needed to be sure that you will like the job you get accepted into. A few things that you should be sure of is whether you want to work in a certain industry, do you have the skill sets that the job requires and are you doing it only for the money.

Desperation: Do not accept the first job out of desperation because your peers have already got offers, or because your parents are getting worried or even if you have to pay off the bank. Wait till a good offer comes your way, it may take some time, but you will find something that will make you happy.
